Governor Abbott Requests Federal Disaster Tax Relief For Texans Impacted By July Storms

TEXAS, October 15 - October 15, 2026 | Austin, Texas | Press Release

Governor Greg Abbott today sent a letter to U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent requesting federal disaster tax relief for individuals and businesses affected by the severe storm and flooding event that began on July 14, 2026.

“Texans who took damage from the July storms and floods need this relief,” said Governor Abbott. “I urge Secretary Bessent to suspend the tax deadlines and waive all late fees and penalties so families and businesses can rebuild.”

Governor Abbott issued a state disaster proclamation on July 14 covering 62 counties. A Major Disaster Declaration was approved on September 1, 2026, for 23 of those counties. The letter requests temporary suspension of applicable federal tax filing and payment deadlines, and a waiver of applicable late fees, for taxpayers in all 62 counties.
