Five Dead as Mexican Navy Aircraft Crashes in Texas

(MENAFN) The Mexican Navy confirmed Monday that one of its aircraft plunged into waters near Galveston in the US state of Texas following a failed medical evacuation mission.

Five individuals have been pronounced dead, while two survived without injury. One person's status remains unknown.

The Navy reported that the King Air ANX-1209 was transporting eight occupants, including a minor, when it crashed during the humanitarian flight. The aircraft carried four Navy officers and four civilians supporting the Michou y Mau Foundation, a charitable organization that provides care for children suffering from severe burn injuries.

The underage patient being transferred for medical care is confirmed among the fatalities.

The US Coast Guard conducted rescue operations and recovered the aircraft from ocean waters.

Mexico's Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement on X, the US-based social media platform, offering condolences for the victims and confirming that officials had reached out to local authorities through the Consulate General of Mexico in Houston to assist bereaved families.

Local media outlets indicate the aircraft was on its final approach when the crash occurred. The incident unfolded as thick fog blanketed portions of Texas, severely limiting visibility in the region.

The tragic accident underscores the risks inherent in medical transport missions, particularly when adverse weather conditions threaten flight safety. Investigators have not yet determined whether the fog played a direct role in causing the crash.
